Cultural and Cool
Location : Buenos Aires
This adventure starts with an overnight stay in Buenos Aires, the bustling capital of Argentina. We offer an optional city tour in the afternoon. Spend the evening at your leisure and discover the ‘Paris of South America’ for yourself.
Tierra del Fuego
Location : Buenos Aires/Ushuaia
Fly early in the morning to Ushuaia, where MS Midnatsol awaits you. Once on board, we kick off our journey with a welcome on board dinner.
Crossing the Drake Passage
Location : Drake Passage
Prepare yourself for Antarctica as we cross the infamous Drake Passage, and trust us – it will take your breath away! Take it all in on board MS Midnatsol with its two-story panorama lounge over the bow, with wall-to-wall windows that bathe the room in natural light and provide extraordinary views.
Penguins, Icebergs, Seals, and Whales
Location : Antarctica
Antarctica is sure to inspire you with its beauty: endless white horizons above oceans full of glorious icebergs and whales. Perhaps even more awe-inspiring will be meeting the huge colonies of penguins. They are not afraid of humans, so you can look forward to truly close encounters with this most charming of bird species as you go ashore to explore the impressive Antarctic scenery. You’ll enjoy close encounters with Antarctic wildlife and glaciers, and old whaling stations and its relics. And from the deck, there are great opportunities to spot whales. You are in one of the most remote areas of the world and the sensations are non-stop.
We will land several times for unforgettable experiences as weather and ice conditions allow. Among the locations we may visit are Half Moon Island and Cuverville Island, home to a large colony of gentoo penguins. Neko Harbor is beautifully located in the innermost part of Andvord Bay, and Paradise Harbor got its descriptive name from the whalers who came here long ago: When the storms were at their worst, this is where they came to seek shelter. The high glacier walls in Wilhelmina Bay convey the mighty power of ice, from calving glacier fronts to floating ice.
Scanning for Wildlife and Joining Lectures
Location : At sea
The expedition team will continue its lecture program, covering history and the great explorers, marine biology, wildlife, oceanography, and climate change. Spend some time on deck and look out for wildlife as we make out way north to the Falklands.
Pubs, Penguins, and Perfect Wilderness
Location : Falkland Islands
When we arrive the Falkland Islands, you will experience everything from red buses and English pubs in the capital Stanley, to penguins, hikes in the hills or along the coastline, and kayaking in crystal-clear waters. New Island is an lovely inlet, with white-sand beaches and turquoise waters. It could easily be mistaken for a Caribbean island, if only the weather was a little bit warmer!
We pass an old shipwreck on our way ashore to enjoy a day among penguins and seals. While we are here, you can join several excursions such as history tours, birdwatching tours, nature walks, and even a scenic plane tour where you can discover the Falklands by air in a classic island-hopping aircraft.
Enjoy Onboard Activities
Location : At sea
Days at sea are full of activity and learning. By now, our expedition team will probably have convinced everybody on board that science is fascinating and fun! We can promise first class ‘edutainment’!
Location : Montevideo
Montevideo boasts colorful cultural diversity, with a picturesque blend of Colonial Spanish, Italian, and Art Deco architectural styles. Long considered one of South America’s most interesting cities, you can visit the Ciudad Vieja (Old Town) with its 18th century buildings; the vibrant Mercado del Puerto; the bustling Avenida 18 de Julio with its numerous theatres, museums, and art galleries; and the stretch of white-sand beaches that surround the city after disembarking the MS Midnatsol.
The MS Midnatsol (Midnight Sun) is dedicated to the wonders of Arctic summer.
MS Midnatsol has a strong environmental profile and modern design. The interior’s bright, colorful décor is inspired by Norway´s sunny warm days of summer, a motif reflected in many of the pieces of Norwegian modern art on board. The ship is also a TV star, having been featured in the award-winning Norwegian television documentary, “Hurtigruten 365.” The vessel´s sun deck and hot tub are on deck 9. Key features on MS Midnatsol include the large, two-story panorama lounge over the bow, with wall-to-wall windows that bathe the room in natural light and provide extraordinary views.
MS Midnatsol is an ice class 1X ship, equipped with advanced technology that makes her exceptionally well suited for expedition cruises in Antarctica. The ship started taking explorers on adventures to Patagonia and Antarctica in 2016.
Interesting lectures, presentations and activities inside the ship as well as out on the sun deck make this an exciting and educational journey. Topics depend on the season and waters we sail in. The Expedition Team hosts a lecture and presentations program and evening gatherings daily. Out on deck you may participate in live points of interest to learn more about the nature, culture and other phenomena we encounter along the coast. In addition, the Expedition Team will introduce you to the uniquely Norwegian notion of “friluftsliv,” and encourages you take part in various “friluftsliv” hikes and activities during the cruise.
